What I like about the aqua Reward Cashback Card

The aqua Reward Cashback Card not only helps you to rebuild your credit, but also rewards you with a cashback deal as well.

  • Cashback reward – Cashback reward cards are rare, and even rarer among the cards designed for those with poor credit. This card offers 0.5% cashback on purchases, up to £100 a year. The amount of cashback you can earn is capped, but at the end of the day it is reward money for using your card, which is not to be sniffed at. Just be aware of the high APR attached to this card – if you do not pay your balance in full, any cashback rewards you have earned could be wiped out by high interest charges.
  • Manageable credit limits – The card has a starting credit limit of £250 to £1,200, depending on your individual circumstances. These manageable credit limits are a great way to demonstrate good borrowing practices, taking away the temptation to spend huge amounts and run up lots of debt. Added to that, cardholders can receive a credit increase on their fourth statement, meaning they could unlock further credit if they stick to their credit limit and make their minimum monthly payments.
  • Overseas usage – The card charges no extra fees on purchases abroad, making it a good option to take on holiday. Typical fees for overseas usage on credit cards are usually around 3%.
  • aqua Credit Checker – Cardholders can also benefit from access to aqua Credit Checker. This is a free premium service, powered by Noddle, which offers free unlimited access to your credit report, personalised tips on how to improve your credit score, weekly alerts and access to money-saving vouchers and offers. The service helps give you a full picture of your credit rating and understand how best to manage your account, giving you the best chance of improving your credit score.
  • Worth knowing – You will only receive cashback on your purchases if you stay within your credit limit and make your minimum payment on time. Additionally, you are not eligible to apply for this card if you have had another aqua, Marbles or Opus card in the past 12 months.

Why trust me

I worked on the front line of personal-finance best buys for over eight years at one of the world’s largest research companies, Nielsen. I reported daily on the developments of the 2008 financial crisis and beyond, keeping up with the changing financial landscape and providing insights to all the major banks in the UK. I know the key players in the market and the tactics behind how they behave. All of which I will apply to highlight the best deals and give honest reviews to help you in your search.

What could be improved

While the cashback offer makes the aqua Reward Cashback Card stand out, there are other credit rebuilder cards on the market that have a lower APR. Also, be aware of the charges and penalty fees that accompany a card like this.

  • High APR – The card has a comparatively high APR. This is not unexpected with a credit rebuilder card, but, as mentioned above, it is something to be aware of, because any cashback rewards could be cancelled out by high interest payments.
  • Other charges – As with other cards, the aqua Reward Cashback Card has penalty fees for exceeding your credit limit or missing a payment. The provider will charge a fee of £12 for late payments, returned payments or for going over your credit limit. Something else to be aware of is that the card charges an even higher APR for cash transactions, so it would be prudent to avoid these where possible.

How does the aqua Reward Cashback Card offer stack up?

There are other credit rebuilder cards on the market that offer lower APRs alongside manageable credit limits and while providing credit report services, but the aqua Reward Cashback Card is currently the only one to offer cashback rewards as well, helping to sweeten the deal. If you travel a lot, the lack of a charge on non-sterling transactions could make a big difference as well.

The aqua Reward Cashback Card credit score

aqua offers a personalised approval service and will consider your application even if you are self-employed, unable to prove a regular income, have had a CCJ (unless you have had a CCJ in the past 12 months), work part-time, are a student, are new to credit, have been turned down for credit in the past or are on a lower income.

aqua does require applicants to be aged 18 or over and UK residents, and to not have any current bankruptcy proceedings against them.

How to apply

Applications can be made through aqua’s website. You will be required to provide personal details, contact details, your residential status, employment status and information regarding your income. Applicants are also required to have a current UK bank or building society account.

Is the aqua Reward Cashback Card right for you?

If you’re looking for a card to help you build your credit rating, but don’t want to forgo potential rewards, then the aqua Reward Cashback Card is one to consider. The card has all the features found in cards designed for those with a bad credit history, such as manageable credit limits, the potential for further credit increases and a credit support service, but has that rare added extra of a 0.5% cashback reward. Also, if you are likely to travel abroad in the near future, then you can benefit from no fees for overseas usage. Just beware of the high APR attached to the card, because if you do not keep on top of your repayments, the high APR could offset any cashback rewards you earn.
