Why we gave this account a 4.5 star review

0% introductory period on purchases – This card has a long 22-month interest-free period on new purchases. This means that you would not need to pay interest on anything you buy for just under 2 years.

0% introductory period on balance transfers – This card also offers a 22-month interest-free period for balance transfers made within the first 90 days of account opening. It is worth noting that balance transfers carry a 2.9% fee (minimum £5).

M&S points – A key selling point for the card is that cardholders can earn reward points, a rare occurrence these days. You will receive one point for every £1 spent in M&S and one point for every £5 spent elsewhere. If you are an M&S Premium Current Account holder, you will receive three points for every £1 spent on your card at M&S – something to bear in mind if you are looking to make the most of the reward offer. Points are accrued and converted to M&S Reward vouchers at the end of the collection period (every three months). Then all you have to do is decide what you want to buy with your vouchers.

What’s the difference between 0% on purchases, and 0% on balance transfer?

A 0% introductory period on new purchases means you won’t build up any interest on the shopping you do during that period. It can be useful if you’re looking to make a big purchase, as using a 0% purchase card gives you extra time to pay off that spend before it starts earning interest.

A 0% balance transfer period can be useful if you are already carrying credit card debt. It means that you can transfer your current balance over and pay down your total without accruing any interest during the introductory period.

In either case, be sure to note when your 0% introductory periods end, as once they run out you’ll pay the standard interest rate on your balance.

Who is this account good for?

The M&S Shopping Plus Card is a great all-rounder – having long introductory 0% periods for both purchases and balance transfer. The generous M&S points program is a real bonus too, and if you’re a frequent M&S shopper this combination could be hard to beat!

Those who also hold an M&S Premium Current Account can earn even more points when they spend with this card, which is something worth considering if this account appeals.

If you are not fussed about having the combination of both 0% purchases and balance transfer periods, then there may be other cards out there more suited to your needs.

There’s a right way to swipe

Credit cards with rewards and 0% introductory offers are excellent, but remember, they are a tool to help you get the most out of your spending. Motley Fool UK Personal Finance motto to follow:

  • Pay off your card in full each month.
  • Choose a card whose rewards are a good fit for you.
  • Don’t spend more than you already would.

Follow this and make your money work overtime for you.

Final take

There are other cards on the market that offer a longer interest-free period on purchases or a longer interest-free period on balance transfers, but what makes this card stand out is the combination of both its purchases offer and balance transfer period as well as reward points. Cards that offer reward points are few and far between, so to have this part of the overall package makes this a great credit card option.
