What is Barclaycard?

As part of the Barclays Group, Barclaycard is one of the main high street credit card providers in the UK. The bank’s roots go back to 1690, though the card arm was set up in 1966. The card division looked to make payments more secure and convenient than cash and cheques.

In the present day, Barclaycard is still a dominant player in the market and often crops up on the best credit card tables. Its card portfolio ranges from cashback cards to balance transfer cards, all with the customer support of an established brand behind it.

Barclaycard cards offer more of a full customer service package than some other providers, with extras such as Barclaycard Entertainment often included as standard. The brand also prides itself on payment innovation, so you can expect it to be at the forefront of any future digital payment developments.

And while it mainly focuses on borrowers with a good or excellent credit score, it also has an award-winning credit rebuilder option which looks to help those with a poor credit history improve their score.

Types of Barclaycards

While there are a number of Barclaycards on the market, they mainly fall into three categories:

0% balance transfer and purchase cards

If you are after cards that can offer you a decent interest-free period on both balance transfers and purchases, then Barclaycard has what you are looking for. While the interest-free periods on both offers don’t particularly stand out, the combination makes it a solid choice for your interest-free borrowing needs.

Cashback rewards cards

With Barclaycard’s portfolio you will also find that rare credit card that actually offers cashback. And as Barclaycard credit cards have no annual fees, you won’t be faced with any sort of ongoing cost. Which means that you can make the most of the reward on offer.

Cards for bad credit

Barclaycard is known to have a high eligibility criteria, however, creates an opportunity for those with bad credit too with the Barclays Forward credit card. It helps establish or repair credit while offering low fees and a 0% introductory rate, which is unusual with this type of card. A word of caution tough, as the 0% period is only three months and thereafter reverts to a 33.9% representative APR.

May be clearer if you say: “While the interest-free periods on each offer doesn’t particularly stand out, the combination makes it a solid choice for your interest-free borrowing needs.”

What does Barclaycard do well?

Barclaycard is not only a well-established high street card provider, but it also provides competitive offers to suit various needs, such as:

  • It offers the Barclaycard Platinum Card, a 0% balance transfer card that also offers 0% APR on purchases. It’s one of the few providers that has a dual introductory period credit card. While it carries a balance transfer fee , it’s lower than the market average which puts it in a competitive position.
  • Account management is simplified through the Barclaycard app, with digital statements as standard.
  • Most cards also give cardholders access to Barclaycard Entertainment. This feature offers discounts, exclusive access and perks at over 3,500 live events across the country each year.
  • Finally, in a market where cashback offers are few and far between, Barclaycard has a Barclaycard Rewards card which offers a 0.25% cashback yield on everyday spend. For cardholders, this is a tangible rewards offer.

Where does Barclaycard fall down?

While Barclaycard has a string of great offers, it helps to know a few of the drawbacks before signing up.

  • The transfer window for balance transfers can be short (shorter than the market standard!) Ensure transfers take place quickly to benefit from the 0% offer.
  • The eligibility criteria might be higher than with other providers, with the exception of the credit building card.
  • Rewards system falls a little flat when the 0% period wears off.

Who’s eligible for Barclaycard credit cards?

Bar the Barclays Forward credit card criteria, Barclays has one of the more stringent application criteria.

  • You need to be 21 or older
  • Earn at least £20,000 per annum
  • Have a clear credit history free from County Court Judgements and Individual Voluntary Agreements. Also, no bankruptcies within the last six years.
  • Credit report should show a clear payment history and you need to have at least four years’ worth of credit history.
  • A permanent UK address for at least two years
  • Prove that there are no affordability issues

Remember when shopping for a Barclays card

Like other credit cards with promotional rates, you will need to make your minimum payments in order to retain your interest-free offer on your Barclaycard credit card. What you may also find is that offers are only available to new customers. And even then applications are subject to status; so you may be offered a different credit limit, representative APR, purchase rate or promotional balance transfer period, depending on your credit history and individual circumstances.

How to apply for a Barclaycard credit card

You can apply online through the Barclaycard website in a few simple steps:

1.  Check your eligibility

Barclays offers an eligibility checker on its website to let you know whether you qualify for one (or more!) of its credit card products. This checker does a soft credit check, which doesn’t affect your credit score.

2.  Gather your information

You will need some information on hand before applying.

  • Contact and address details
  • Employment information
  • Earnings before tax
  • A general idea of expenses
  • Bank account details

Once approved, you may need to provide two months’ pay slips and bank statements.
