It works using a format you’re probably already familiar with. You just create an account and then you’re able to buy and sell online. Currently, you do need to have a PayPal account to sell or make a purchase, but the company is beginning to roll out Apple Pay and card payments.
If you’re a seller, just take some snazzy photos of your unwanted clothes and create a listing.
Then, when a buyer requests the item and you agree with the terms, you just pop it in the post and await payment.
As a buyer, you’re free to browse the online marketplace to your heart’s content. When you see an item that catches your eye, you can contact the seller to arrange to buy the item.
It’s a very straightforward system, and in some ways its easier than marketplaces like eBay, where there can sometimes be a bidding process.
What are the fees?
Depop’s fee structure is nice and easy. The company doesn’t charge any listing or subscription fees.
If you’re a buyer, you just pay the price of the item plus shipping.
As a seller, every item you sell is charged a flat 10% fee. This is worked out using the total transaction amount, which includes shipping costs. There are also PayPal fees to keep in mind. Currently, these will cost you 2.9% of the transaction, plus an additional £0.30.
Depop only collects fees when you successfully sell something on the platform.
Who is the platform aimed at?
The main focus is to capture the attention of younger online shoppers. Depop does this by showing that buying and selling second-hand clothes can be fun and stylish, not just a way to get rid of unwanted stuff.
Depop recognises that its users know how to use a cameraphone well. The company encourage sellers to use Instagram-worthy snaps of clothes to create better listings.
This keeps the platform looking nice and is obviously much more appealing to buyers than the dark, blurry photos you might find on other marketplace sites.

It’s still worth taking standard precautions like checking items on arrival and keeping hold of any proof of postage.
