Bottom line

With simple, jargon-free questions, Confused.com make it easy to search for home insurance quotes. There’s also no need to arm yourself with prior information about rebuild or contents value, as these fields are automatically estimated with the option to change if need be. A huge number of results at a range of price points means you won’t be short of choice.

What does Confused.com do well?

Confused.com want you to be anything but confused when it comes to sorting out your insurance – here’s what they do particularly well:

Clarity – Questions are clear and to the point while definition boxes minimise the risk of misunderstanding – for example, bathrooms don’t need a bath or shower, just a toilet. Even the dreaded question about lock type is made simple with handy diagrams and explanations. This clear approach means you stand a better chance of getting accurate quotes based on your actual needs.

Quick updates – You can update quotes by simply adding or removing options such as home emergency cover and legal expenses from a side menu. You can also tweak the excess value to see how this affects the overall premium. If you choose to add extras, Confused.com also include a separate list of providers that don’t quite make the cut just in case you want to compare premiums

Choice – Confused.com generates a huge number of quotes, more than 40 in this instance. Price points also varied from a couple of hundred pounds all the way up to well over £1,000 so you certainly won’t be short on choice. The list of quotes is automatically sorted in ascending price order and despite the number of quotes, the page isn’t fussy so it’s easy on the eye.

Auto-generated estimates – Rebuild cost and contents value is automatically estimated so you don’t need to worry about pricing up all your worldly goods – saving you time.

Option to insure specific items – You can also choose to insure specific high value items like a laptop, jewellery or bicycles which saves you searching for standalone policies. You’ll also be able to add insurance for these belongings while they’re outside your home.

Price clarity – When you click into each quote, Confused.com will show you the annual cost and the cost of paying in monthly instalments removing any confusion over price.

Special offers highlighted – Discounts for Confused.com customers are highlighted so if you love a good deal, they’ll be clearly signposted.

What’s not so great?

Ironically, one of the things Confused.com does well is also one of its drawbacks:

Choice – The sheer number of results can make choosing a quote more complicated than it needs to be. And because so many quotes fill the page, it’s almost impossible to know where to start.

Not enough at-a-glance info – The only top-level details included are excess and a few features for optional extras. To get more details about the exact value of cover, you have to click on the quote which takes you to another page. It’s not the end of the world but it’s clunky and not as intuitive as having a section that expands which makes the selection process more long-winded than it needs to be.

Lack of consistency – The page of quotes might look consistent but when you click for ‘more info’ not all pages contain the same information. Some break down the quote by contents cover, buildings cover, and outdoor cover while others simply don’t. Again, not a major issue but it means if you want more information, you’ll have to find it yourself.

How straightforward is it to get a home insurance quote with Confused.com?

Getting a quote at Confused.com, is easy even though it’s not the quickest. It takes about 9 minutes to generate a quote from start to finish but because questions are jargon free, it doesn’t feel like an onerous task. Diagrams and definition boxes are a nice touch and make you feel supported throughout the questioning process.

A lot of questions have auto-generated answers which makes life easier. For example –  the age of your house, whether it’s listed, its rebuild and your contents value. You can of course, change these if you need to.

However, it’s worth pointing out that you might want to double check the auto filled answers. One question asked about market value but generated an amount considerably lower than the actual figure. The rebuild value was also about £2,000 out compared to the ABI’s building insurance calculator. Not a serious issue for a standard bricks and mortar home but if yours is listed or built from other materials, you might need to do some homework on costs.

The vast number of quotes means there’s a good chance you’ll find a policy that suits you, but the sheer volume makes choice a double-edged sword. And remember, despite the choice, there are still a number of providers that don’t appear on comparison sites so you won’t be able to capture all the available deals on the market.

Like most user-specific websites, the system times out after a period of non-activity but so long as you’ve registered your details, you’ll be able to instantly retrieve your quote.

Is it easy to use?

The platform is very easy to navigate and uses everyday language, so it never feels like you’re being grilled for information.

Instant quote retrieval removes the frustration of being timed-out, and gives you a convenient outline of the cover you’ve asked for as well as the top three cheapest quotes. A summary page also lets you check your answers and edit your details at any point.

Is Confused.com home insurance comparison right for you?

If you like choice and you’re looking for an easy way to generate lots of quotes, Confused.com could be exactly what you’re looking for.

The whole process was straightforward, with questions and definitions clearly set out and easy to understand. Most importantly, it didn’t feel like an intimidating process even though there were questions about specific details such as locks on doors and windows.

Exclusive discounts and a £20 reward voucher are also up for grabs, making a good deal even sweeter. Conveniently, the top five quotes are emailed straight to you so you can forward to a partner or housemate for discussion. Overall, Confused.com makes searching for home insurance as easy as it can be, but you’ll need time to sift through the vast quantity of results.
