What I like about the Toolstation Trade Card

The Toolstation Trade Card is a card that aims to keep your business finances under control and ease your cash flow, with the added bonus of no annual fee.

  • Interest-free offer – If you are already a business that buys products from Toolstation and Travis Perkins companies, then this is the offer you will be most interested in. You can receive up to 116 days interest-free on purchases made at these groups, provided you pay your balance in full and on time. This is the standard 56 days interest-free that most cards offer (and that this card offers on purchases made elsewhere) plus 60 days for qualifying purchases.
  • Annual fee – This card has no annual fee. You can therefore feel the benefit of the interest-free offers and Business Rewards programme with no ongoing cost beyond the card’s APR.
  • Introductory offer – Alongside its ongoing offer for interest-free purchases, the Toolstation Trade Card also offers an initial three months interest-free on purchases. This means that for three months from account opening any purchases you make will not incur interest; you will just need to make your minimum monthly payment. However, as with any introductory offer, when the three months ends, any remaining balance will be charged interest at the card’s standard rate.
  • Account management – A big perk of any business credit card is online account management and reporting. The Toolstation Trade Card has online servicing as well as the MyControls feature, which allows you to set up individual spending profiles for each card and temporarily suspend cards on your account, giving you greater control over what is spent where and when.
  • Rewards – Being supported by Barclaycard has its advantages, and in this case it means that cardholders gain access to the provider’s Business Rewards programme. This gives you discounts on selected hotel reservations and airport parking, as well as rebates on purchases from companies such as Argos and Avis.
  • Worth knowing – You can’t apply for this card if you already have a card from any of the other participating Travis Perkins companies. A list of these can be found on the Barclaycard website.

What could be improved?

You may not feel the benefits of this card if your business does not use Toolstation and Travis Perkins companies, but other than that there is only one chink in this card’s armour.

  • Overseas usage – The card has a foreign transaction fee of 2.99% and a cash withdrawal charge of 3% (minimum £3). This is a pretty standard charge across cards, but it is worth mentioning as there are other business cards on offer without the foreign transaction fee.

How does the Toolstation Trade Card offer stack up?

This card holds its own against its competitors. Where it really stands out is the combination of no annual fee and an introductory interest-free offer on purchases. It is hard to find an introductory offer on business credit cards, let alone on a card with no annual fee attached. However, the card does have a comparatively high APR as a result, meaning that once the introductory offer has finished, purchases will be charged at a relatively high interest rate. Added to that, the card has a higher rate of interest for any cash withdrawals made, plus foreign transaction fees. On the surface it is a strong contender, especially if you are smart in the way you use the interest-free offer on purchases. Bear in mind, though, that other cards may not give you as much in the way of 0% offers but have a better standard rate.

The Toolstation Trade Card credit score

You are not eligible to apply for this card if you or your business is bankrupt, and Barclaycard requires that you and your business have no overdue existing financial commitments. Additionally, you are not eligible if you have been declined for a Barclaycard commercial card in the last six months.

Your business turnover or new business plan needs to exceed £10,000 per year, and your business must be based in the UK. Directors and employees of the business must also be at least 18 years of age.

How do you apply?

You can find information about the card on Toolstation’s website, but for applications you will be redirected to Barclaycard’s site.

For the application you will need to provide your business details; your bank details; your business financial information, including business turnover and net profit before tax; as well as details of your business partners or other owners, such as dates of births and residential addresses for the past three years.

Is the Toolstation Trade Card right for you?

If your business frequently purchases trade supplies, then the Toolstation Trade Card could really work for you. Its biggest advantage is freeing up cash flow through an extended interest-free period on purchases from eligible companies. This enables you to make the purchases you need and keep your business moving while avoiding any costly interest charges, as long as you pay your balance in full and on time each month. However, even if you strip out the 116 days interest free on Toolstation and Travis Perkins purchases, you are looking at a business credit card that offers a three-month introductory interest-free offer on purchases, no annual fee, online account management and business rewards through Barclaycard. Overall, it’s a tempting package for any type of business.
