The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card has one of the longest 0% balance transfer periods on the market, 28 months to be precise. You will have to pay a 1.75% fee to transfer your balance, but Barclaycard is sweetening the deal with 0% interest on purchases for six months.

Great for: Really long balance transfer period
3.5 stars question mark

The Barclaycard Platinum 28-month balance transfer card features a long 28 months of 0% interest on balance transfers made in the first 60 days. The drawback is that there is a fee for balance transfers, which is often the case when looking at the balance transfer cards with the longest duration. The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card Bottom Line

The Barclaycard Platinum 28-month balance transfer card features a long 28 months of 0% interest on balance transfers made in the first 60 days. The drawback is that there is a fee for balance transfers, which is often the case when looking at the balance transfer cards with the longest duration. As an added sweetener, there’s also 0% on purchases for six months and ongoing access to your Experian Credit Score.

This card is offering one of the longest balance periods currently available, but unsurprisingly with such a long term, you will be required to pay a transfer fee. On the bright side, the card has plenty of additional offers to keep you happy.

What I like about the Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card

The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card is not all about its headline offer. It has plenty of added extras to tempt you.

  • 0% introductory balance transfer offer – This is the headline offer, a long 28 months of 0% interest on balance transfers made within 60 days of account opening. That is over two years to pay down the balance owed, giving you a large runway in which to do so. The interest savings if you transfer a balance of £3,500 from a card with an APR of 19.9% would average £1,284, assuming you pay off £95 each month, which is a saving not to be sniffed at. Do take note there is a 1.75% balance transfer fee attached to this deal. Balance transfers can be a great way to get out from under high-interest payments, and this card offers a decent amount of time to get your finances under control.
  • 0% introductory rate on purchases – The first of many additional benefits is 0% interest on purchases for six months. It is rare to find balance transfer cards that offer deals on purchases as well, largely as the main purpose of taking out a balance transfer card is to start paying off your debt. Six months is a decent offer, just be aware that the rate will return to the card’s regular APR after the introductory period.
  • Other benefits – There are certain benefits to taking a card out with a provider such as Barclaycard. The first is free ongoing access to your Experian Credit Score. As this card is certainly targeted at those with a good credit rating, this access is not necessarily an essential feature, but it’s definitely nice to have. Similarly, cardholders will receive exclusive savings on live events with Barclaycard Entertainment, another added perk for the overall package.
  • Worth knowing – This offer is only available to new customers. Additionally, you will need to be aged 21 or over, rather than the standard age of 18 or over, and have a personal annual income of more than £20,000.

What could be improved

The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card offers a nice overall package, but it has one major drawback.

  • Balance-transfer fee – Unsurprisingly, considering the long duration of its balance transfer period, the card charges a fee of 1.75% on any transfers made within 60 days of account opening. Taking the example above, that means that you would end up paying £87.50 in fees for the £3,500 balance you have transferred. Added to that, Barclaycard has a convoluted system in place where you will initially be charged a fee of 3.5% and refunded the difference within 28 working days from the point when your balance transfer is processed. It can get confusing, so make sure you do your sums before committing to the card.

How does the Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card offer stack up?

The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card is definitely up there in terms of the length of the introductory balance transfer period. Just beware of the transfer fee, as there are other cards out there that have a shorter term but are fee free. The additional extras such as access to your Experian Credit Score, discounts on live events, plus the period of 0% on purchases means you do get a good overall package if you can resign yourself to that balance transfer fee.

The Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card credit score

The card has quite high eligibility requirements, so do check before you apply. Applicants will need to be aged 21 or over, have at least four years’ experience of managing credit, have a personal annual income of £20,000 or more and have had a permanent UK address for at least three months. In addition to all of the above, any applicants with IVAs, CCJs or those who have been declared bankrupt in the past six years, will not be considered.

How to apply

You can apply online through Barclaycard’s site and, if successful, you will receive your card in five working days.

You will be required to provide address details for the past two years, a phone number and email address, current employment details, details of your annual income and your main bank account sort code and account number. Barclaycard will conduct credit checks as part of the application process, to assess your suitability.

Is the Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card right for you?

If you are looking for a long runway in which to pay off your balance, then the Barclaycard 28 Month Balance Transfer Platinum Card could be a good option. The offer of 28 months at 0% is a decent amount of time, but do be aware of that balance transfer fee. While the balance transfer period would be the main reason for taking out the card, you would be in line to receive a full package of benefits as a Barclaycard cardholder, plus that rare added extra of an introductory 0% interest period on purchases as well, which definitely helps sweeten the deal.
