Motley Fool Scoops Finance "Best Site" Award
Set for further two decades of shining outperformance (future thereafter uncertain)
London, Friday 25 June -- Late Thursday, the Motley Fool UK scooped the coveted Internet industry New Media Age award for Best Finance Site at a gala dinner in West London. Accepting the award, self-confessed Fool David Berger attempted an acceptance speech but broke down amidst tears of joy and gratitude and had to be led away by security men. Camp TV comedian Graham Norton, presenting the awards, quipped to a packed crowd: "What an idiot!"
Clutching his shiny, wave-shaped trophy, Berger commented afterwards, "I don't know what came over me. All I could think of was Gwyneth Paltrow and how she must have felt at the Oscars. I wanted to say thank-you to all the people who had made this possible, from the extraordinary community of Fools out there who make our site what it is in the UK, to all our wonderful writers and UK staff, through to the outrageously good support we have had from the rest of the US Motley Fool over the last 18 months. It was just too much, and I broke down."
Berger went on to wonder if the award could be taken away for such an evident display of lack of moral fibre and public emotion.
Meanwhile, New Media Age wrote in their winning judgement: "Already a hit in the US, Motley Fool could have created a regurgitated, repurposed version of its site in the UK. It didn't." The judges also said that "the site is written in wonderful plain English. It's rare to find good writing on the 'Net." They continued: "The community aspect was clearly built 'bottom-up' and not 'top-down,' and its highly targeted content was utterly empowering people searching for personal finance answers."
Ends.
