The Day The Sun Went Out

Introduction

Baker Street, London -- Wednesday, 11 a.m., August 11th, 1999

A shadow descends on Fool HQ, a chill settles on our bones as the sun goes black and the Earth and the faces of all the people on it look dead. Dogs howl, rats scurry out of apartment buildings, traffic wardens fling down their ticket books and leg it off down the street. Gripped by horror at the thought of existence without the life-giving orb, our thoughts turn to those for whom the sun truly seems to have been turned off, for the moment at least.

Future Network (LSE: FNET) -- you've heard of them, no? -- a niche magazine publisher and a hot IPO this summer. They went public shortly before Freeserve. Mistake. Nothing much has been heard of them since. Checking our message boards shows over 1,300 messages about Freeserve and just five about Future Network. Does Future deserve to emerge from the shadow of Freeserve? Read on below.

Read on too about Linford Christie, our Linford. What has happened?! The media has rallied round -- nandrolone is produced in athletes at levels far above those in ordinary people. The guy just trains hard. It's a tragedy. We look at the issues below and wonder whether Linford's light will ever shine forth again.
