Ah, pubs. Lovely places. As a special weekend treat our official Pub Analyst, Personal Finance Fool James Carlisle (TMFJimmyC), has unearthed five vital bits of pub-based information that any Fool should know...

Pubs derive from tavernae introduced by the Romans.

There are 61,000 pubs in the UK and a total of 830,000 people are employed to bring us beer.

The oldest pub is the Fighting Cocks in St. Albans. There has been a pub on the site since the 8th century, although the current building dates from the 11th century.

There are 1,600 different types of beer brewed in the UK.

And the top essential pub fact...

The commonest pub name is the Red Lion.
