It would be absurd to suggest that the directors didn't have some sort of inclination that business was down. If pre-tax profit is significantly below £85m, it can only add to the idea that the directors saw this coming and took advantage of current rules to profit themselves. In this scenario, at the very least, a formal investigation would be warranted.
Let’s wait and see what the results look like. But, with the actions of corporates under close scrutiny over the past few months, this will play straight into the hands of movements such as Occupy.
