Are you looking for an affordable city break? We tell you where to go.

May's second bank holiday is just around the corner -- and there are sure to be millions of us making a quick mini-break getaway.

With the credit crunch biting deeper, your wallet may be feeling uncomfortably light. And research suggests that an increasing number of Brits are choosing to holiday at home this year, in a bid to save a bit of cash.

But if you don't want to miss out on an overseas break, where should you head for a Foolish holiday?

According to a new study from The Post Office, Warsaw is the place to go.

Culture vultures

You can now get cheap flights to a huge range of destinations, in Europe and beyond. The financial problems often start when you actually arrive at your destination -- particularly if you're keen to take in galleries, museums, concerts and other cultural attractions.

This is where the Polish capital really comes up trumps. According to Post Office Travel Services, a trip to Warsaw will cost less than 25% of the equivalent trip to London.

This is despite the Polish zloty strengthening in the last year - and the fact that many of London's attractions (like major museums) are completely free.

This table, from The Post Office's Cost of Culture survey, shows why:

(This is an abridged version of The Post Office's full table, which contains data for 10 cities. Data relates to exchange rates on May 8th 2008).

According to the research, Warsaw is by far the most affordable of the locations studied when it comes to music and heritage sites. In total, a culture-packed tour of the capital should set you back just £75.28.

At the other end of the price spectrum is... yup, you've guessed it - London - where the equivalent cultural activities will set you back over £300!

And the rest?

So, if you're thinking of heading east, just how much will the whole trip set you back?

Well, at the time of writing, I found a bank holiday package to Warsaw - including return flights and three nights' accommodation in a four star, city centre hotel - for £221.69 per person on Lastminute.com. Not peanuts, but for a peak time trip at short notice, not bad either.

And if you're flexible about dates and are willing to build the package yourself, you can cut that price in half. For example, I found return flights to Warsaw, including tax, for as little as £50 with Wizz Air.

Wherever you end up going, make sure you're insured to protect against unexpected happenings.

Fortunately, travel insurance is currently cheaper than ever - so there's no excuse not to get some!

London opera for £137 - well, yes, if you MUST have top end tickets. You can get pretty good seats for £30-40. If the whole point of the article is that there's a credit crunch on, why would you be buying the best tickets in the house when others will do just as well?

Again, why would you be staying in a four star hotel if money were tight (which is, apparently, the premise of this article)?

I could say this of many points in the article...

Hi,
I totally agree with the above comments. Fool often "micks" other sites and commentaators for their "foolish" articles. This one should not have made publication. Re-reporting a totally biased report from the Post Office one of whose most profitable services is Foreign Exchange (and I use it) is foolhardy.
Surely the site is above the Sun's "Man in a white van" level of articles.
Must do much better ...

Have recently returned from a stay in Warsaw - is a great plave and we definitely got value for money - BEWARE if you fly with a budget airline from Warsaw Etiuda air terminal - once you have checked in & gone through to departures there are no shops, no restaurants, NO NOTHING!!!

Agree with other posters, a reporter out to submit a 'story' before the deadline.

If Fool wants to be taken seriously we need more considered articles.

Once again the fool has Nothing new.

I only now come to this site to laugh at the coments.

Reporters, do you research! Rather than "copy paste"!

I think my 12 year old nephew writes better articles for his school newspaper!

I agree with almost all of the above comments. I have been to all of the cities mentioned (bar one) above. If you want to go to New York, Warsaw will not do. I would advise you to save instead. Since the article is based around how to save money around the bank holiday, how can people (especially with kids) then be flexible to bring the prices down ? the bank holiday is not !. A poor article (similar to a few previous ones) that is based more around theoretical finance than true travel and constraints.

Goodness! There are some feisty Fools around! I understand what's being said but I actually appreciated the article. We don't throw money around, don't own a car and don't travel abroad every year but when we do we like to spoil ourselves at a 4* hotel for a few days and a decent seat at the opera. Showing cheaper seats would make no difference as it's all comparative and the continental houses do offer better value for money. Go to Vienna's Opera House and children can buy any seat in the house - and I do mean any - for about a tenner. If every travel article looked at the bare bones backpacking options it would be totally pointless. I can't afford to throw money at the stock market but we still - quite rightly - cover those! Variety is the spice of life!!
