What A Saving!

Published in Investing on 10 July 2009

Saving a few pounds can add up to a tidy sum, old plates can teach us about market forces, and the rain really does fall on the just and the unjust -- according to our board regulars, anyway.

What a saving!

How much do you reckon you could save if you cut out those unnecessary fripperies that you waste money on every day -- fancy coffees, choccies that are making you fat, and all that sort of stuff? Think you'd be, maybe, a couple of hundred quid better off come Christmas? That's what parser wondered recently…

"I just thought I'd post an observation about an experiment I ran last week.

For one reason and another I decided to try to spend less last week on my little luxuries that I assumed were helping me get through the day at work in the office.

result:

No morning newspaper. Saving = …"

No, we're not going to steal the punchline, you'll have to read it for yourself.

Chamberlain the peacemaker?

What might a 1938 plate featuring Neville Chamberlain have to teach us about the macro-economic characteristics of markets? Well, it's all part of Seasider100's investment strategies…

"The plate in question was made in 1938. It was slip cast, transfer printed and mass produced, so why did I pay £100 for it in 2009? Because, dear fellow Fools, it was not so much a plate as a lesson in the behaviour of markets.

Obviously many of the erudite folk here understand the politics of 1938 well, but for the majority Churchill was right, Chamberlain was wrong - his lost son the reason for his craven appeasement. In the middle of this plate, though, is a noble portrait of Chamberlain, beneath the quotation "I am myself a man of peace to the depths of my soul", around the rim "Chamberlain the Peacemaker"."

What's new at the Fool?

With The Motley Fool having refocused on investment of late, we'll be keeping everyone informed of new developments on the What's New at the Motley Fool board. This week saw The return of Duelling Fools, and revamped A-Z & Investing Boards lists. If you mark it as a favourite (just click the little red heart next to the board name), you'll be sure not to miss out on exciting future announcements.

And finally…

It's not often that Fools get an invite for tea and cakes with the Queen, but popular poster Beerpig did recently:

"As President of a local Law society, my missus and I were honoured to be invited to the Royal Garden Party yesterday at Buckingham Palace. It was really exciting, you know, a once in a lifetime event and we both got well suited and booted for it, Mrs B buying a new dress and me hiring the tails and hat from the local outfitters after finding I could no longer get into my own. We both took the day off work, caught the train to Euston then the Victoria line to Green Park, and following a quick lunch in the Blue Posts we trotted across Green Park itself to join the long queue of other guests snaking down Constitution Hill to the Palace gates."

Why did he post on the Katastrophe Korner? That'll be the English weather, that will.

If you've got any insights into money, investments, or just getting rained on in posh places, the Community is waiting for you, so do come on over.
