Do you feel like giving your finances a short, sharp shock? Is money tight, but you still fancy a summer holiday? Then read on, because these tips could save you thousands of pounds every year - gain with little pain!

1. Take in a lodger

The government allows you to rent out a room in your home and earn up to £4,250 a year without paying tax. To find out how to earn over £80 a week, read on.

2. Buy cheaper insurance and investments

Shop around for all types of insurance, including home, life, health, home, motor, travel or pet cover. Start by visiting our Insurance Centre.

3. Give up smoking

4. Switch your mortgage

A premium satellite package can cost as much as £50 a month. Do you really need all those extra film and sports channels? You could save £25 a month by switching to a basic bundle of channels.

8. Cancel your gym membership

Gym fees vary, but typically are in the region of £50 a month. Your local council-run pool will be much cheaper if you pay as you go.

9. Pay by Direct Debit for discounts

Bank clearing house BACS reckons that a typical consumer can save £169 a year by paying bills by Direct Debit. Also, paying by DD usually means better deals on loans, mortgages and so on.

10. Switch gas and electricity suppliers

11. Read a newspaper for free

Most newspapers are available online, so why not read them for nothing? Alternatively, keep up to date with BBC News Online or Sky News. Take a book if you need something to read while commuting. As a special treat, you could treat yourself to your favourite Sunday newspaper as a reward for being frugal!

12. Switch your Internet connection

Changing ISP (Internet Service Provider) could save you a tidy sum, whether you have a broadband or dial-up connection. 13. Switch your bank account

Ten pints of beer a week (that's twenty units of alcohol, just below the recommended limit for men) costs £25 or more - that's £1,300 a year. Halve your consumption and you'll save over £50 a month.
