Reporting Next Week

By Rob Davies (TMFEssex)

Colchester, Essex -- Results come thick and fast next week. Monday kicks off with interim results from AEA Technology (LSE: AAT). One if its major businesses is railways, and the recent share price rise suggests there could be good news to come.

Tuesday sees interim figures from games designer Eidos (LSE: EID). It has already sacrificed its CEO. Also on that day we get interim results from Kingston Communications (LSE: KCOM). This Hull-based telephony company is shaming its rivals with the speed it is rolling out broadband access.

Platinum miner Lonmin (LSE: LMI) tells us how much it made last year on this day as well. It ought to be a lot because platinum prices have been soaring. There will be probably be less rejoicing when QXL (LSE: QXL) tells us how much it lost in the three months of its second quarter. The share price decline from 700p to 25p probably encapsulates most of the story already. However, we can expect better news from boring old utility company Severn Trent (LSE: SVT). Although interim profits form the core water business will be lower than last year, because of the new pricing regime, the market loves the stable earnings and solid cash flow and has pushed the share to almost twice the price of its low in February.

Wednesday brings the maiden annual results from Granada Media (LSE: GME) and Marconi (LSE: MONI). The media company has had a bumpy ride since it was spun off from the old Granada and subsequently bought the TV interests of Lord Hollick. Much interest will focus on the development of ONDigital, where it has a 50% stake. This terrestrial digital TV business is probably struggling to match the growth of its satellite and cable TV rivals. Marconi is an indirect beneficiary of this war as interactivity is spurring demand for more and more broadband access. This telecom equipment supplier will undoubtedly report good headline figures, but its large amortisation charge will leave a large dent at the bottom line. But news of things like the $1m 480Gbit switch router (described as "the fastest thing on earth") may impress the techies. Also out on Wednesday are interim results from Johnson Matthey (LSE: JMAT). Doubtless it will make vaguely positive noises about the prospects for fuel cells. Just as it has done every year for the last fifteen years.

On Thursday plasterboard board manufacturer BPB (LSE: BPB) will tell us what its interim profits are. Hopefully, it will also tell us how bad things are in the US market, where it recently made a large acquisition. This day also brings interim figures from Plasmon (LSE: PLM). This technology tiddler makes optical data storage disks. British Land (LSE: BLND) gives us interim results on Thursday as well.
