I've Got a Little List!

By Nigel Roberts (TMFNigel)

"As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list--I've got a little list"

-- Lord High Executioner, from The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan

Chippenham, Wiltshire -- This article is being written, and posted on the site, on the 30th December, but I guess most people will be reading it after the new year celebrations have been and gone. Assuming you are reading this after the millennium I hope that you all had a great time, and the fact that you are reading this means that the Y2K bug did not bite so hard. If you are reading this before the partying starts, well good luck and remember -- pace yourself!

So that's it - the twentieth century has finished, it's over, gone forever. It was an interesting century don't you think? The Chinese have an ancient "curse" that says "May you live in interesting times", well, for those of us who have lived through the closing years of the century, we certainly have lived through interesting and exciting times. Those of us who also managed to live through the first half of the century also lived through exciting times, but I am just glad that we don't have too much of that sort of "interest" any more!

I thought long and hard about what I should write for the last Fools Eye View of the old millennium, and decided that just about anything I could think of would look pretty trite. We are all going to be fed up with reviews of the 20th Century, or forecast of what is to come in the 21st Century. Lets just hope that it will be the century of Fools!

I remembered when I was a small child living in Hong Kong, and my parents taking me to see The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. A song was sung by Ko Ko, the Lord High Executioner, "I've got a little list -- I've got a little list" those words have stayed with me all my life -- I love lists. So I thought I would use today to publish some lists, they are always interesting aren't they! Do you know which was the best performing company, by share price in 1999? Which was the worst?
