Following the recent gas and electricity rises, water rates are set to increase. Severn Trent has announced that average annual water bills across the Midlands will increase from £253 to £267. The 5.7% rise, nearly three times the rate of inflation, will be used to fund investment into tap water and river quality and Severn Trent claims it is actually lower than the maximum amount permitted by regulator Ofwat. What's more, most of the other water companies are set to follow suit, with South West Water customers expected to see price rises of 9.4%. So what can we do to combat these rises? Well there are a number of measures we can take to both save money and water: 1. Fit a water meter Firstly, if you live in a small household (under four people) investigate the savings that can be made by switching to a metered water system. Water meters are usually fitted for free and can save you a fortune -- a single person living alone could save over £300 per year. Use this calculator to see how much you could save. 2. Use less water when you flush Reduce the amount of water used every time you flush the toilet. Fit a water saving "hippo", or even put a brick in your cistern and you'll save 2-3 litres per flush -- which could add up to nearly £9 per year. 3. Shower, don't bath Simply by taking a 5-minute shower rather than a bath can save over 5 litres of water. 4. Fix those dripping taps A dripping tap can waste around 15 litres of water a day -- get those tools out and replace those washers! 5. Run appliances only when full Try to get into the habit of only running the washing machine and dishwasher when they're full. And by using economy modes you can save even more. 6. Boil what you need Don't fill the kettle to the top if you're only making a cup of tea -- boil what you need. This will save you electricity, too. 7. Use a water butt Make the most of that rainwater by fitting a water butt -- you'll get gallons to water your plants with for free and it's far better for them than tap water, too. Contact your local council as many subsidise water butts purchased through them. 8. Don't waste water Finally, don't leave the tap running when brushing your teeth and use a bowl when washing up -- you'll save even more! > How To Cut Your Energy Bills | Switch Now For Big Fuel Savings
