MONEY COMMENT

One of the many money-saving tips we've promoted on this site is switching your home fuel supplier to get a better deal. However, you don't need to stop there. You can also take some practical steps to save even more money by changing your fuel consumption habits. And as this is Energy Efficiency Week, what better time to do your bit for the environment! Just over a quarter (28%) of carbon dioxide emissions in this country are caused by our homes. Energy Saving Trust is the organiser of Energy Efficiency Week and its website is an excellent place to start if you want some practical ideas of what you can do. For example, you can complete a home energy check online and they'll send you a report within two weeks which will assess how efficient your home is and where you might be able to save money. There is also a 10-point plan, which could save you around £200 a year. Getting cavity wall insulation and replacing an old boiler can produce big annual savings and pay for themselves in a few years. Other measures, such as using energy efficient light bulbs, drawing curtains at dusk and getting an insulating jacket for your boiler offer simpler and more immediate savings. Buying energy efficient appliances also makes a big difference. A new, energy efficient washing machine (look out for the distinctive blue and orange labels that denote recommended products) can use just a third of what an older appliance needs. Other useful areas of the site include a section on getting local advice and a grants calculator. For example, in my area, I could be eligible for local council grants relating to loft and cavity wall insulation. For those who are extremely environmentally conscious, grants of between £400 to £5,000 are available if you install a renewable energy system, such as solar power.
