I really enjoyed the podcast; I think that this is the first one that I have ever listened to on the Fool. I often see David on the Beeb and think that he did a better job of interviewing Alvin than other broadcasters do when interviewing David.

The podcast was easy to understand without talking down to the listener and provided some sound advice that everyone should bear in mind.

However, whilst the idea of the ‘sleep test’ sounds good, I think that it could easily be overdone. Donald Keough, in “The Ten Commandments for Business Failure”, rates not taking risks as the number one disease of success. That said, getting Alvin to quantify an amount for a working ‘safety net’ does set a relatively easy to achieve baseline, before risking your money in the market.

The piece about investing in art also contained some useful points. When I decided to diversify into both art and wine I decided to buy only pictures that I really liked and wine that I wished that I could afford to drink, so perhaps I am on the right track….

Anyway, thanks for the podcast, I am going to make an effort to listen to them from now on.

Kind regards, Tamesis Child.

Hi Richard,

Welcome to Money Talk, where the Motley Fool podcast team tackles the financial issues of the day with a touch humour, a hint of irreverence but always with a sense of purpose.

We were delighted when Alvin Hall accepted our invitation to appear on Money Talk - he is a very busy man as you can imagine. Nevertheless, we had plenty of time to chat, which is something that can be in short supply when I’m on telly or radio. Live media interviews are a completely different discipline – it’s often about distilling 60-minutes worth of content into a 60-second sound-bite!

We have lots of great guests lined up for the summer, so do keep an eye open for topics that interest you. If there is anything that you would like us to cover specifically, please let us know at moneytalk@fool.co.uk.

About two months ago we looked at investing in wine when Stephen Davies of Lay and Wheeler kindly joined us on the podcast. You can find it through this link.

Fab podcast as always. I'm surprised it doesn't seem to attract all that much attention, but perhaps the number of comments isn't a good indicator. I think Alvin Hall is a real voice of reason for the layman.

A very good article, especially doubling up the amount of cash drip fed into the ETF, in a falling market.

Although, given current market conditions, I would have been interested to know how Alvin would invest if the market began to rise?

Best Money Talk I've heard so far! Thanks, David and Alvin, for your insights.

About the presenter

David Kuo is The Motley Fool’s media personality. He can be heard on BBC London’s (94.9FM) Breakfast Show where he arouses listeners every weekday morning with his unique brand of financial news. He is also a regular commentator on national news programmes including CNBC, BBC News, and Sky News.

David stumbled into the world of broadcasting at the turn of the Millennium when he was invited to comment on the stock market crash. He says, “I think I stunned Londoners speechless when I said the good thing about the crash is that shares are now more affordable for people who want to invest in the stock market!”

His attitude to investing has never wavered, as he always sees downturns in the market as a buying opportunity for long-term investors.
