Some good points from Barbara but the fear she talks about would seem to be more relevant to the private small investor who is usually the last to know sadly. The big selling or buying happens before the poor old PI can get a grip on things. But to say you buy when fear grips the market should perhaps be ' buy when the market, the media and the cabbies are all totally gripped by fear - then and only the is it safe to buy'. When we were reading about 'armageddon and financial meltdown Goldman et al were filling their pockets in March 09. The volumes of buying around that time were over 2bn to 2.5bn on the NYSE and it's usually around 1 to 1.5gb. They knew when to buy and THAT is the time for us poor saps to buy...psychology doesn't come into it. Just watch the big boys and buy when they do...

About the presenter

David Kuo is The Motley Fool’s media personality. He can be heard on BBC London’s (94.9FM) Breakfast Show where he arouses listeners every weekday morning with his unique brand of financial news. He is also a regular commentator on national news programmes including CNBC, BBC News, and Sky News.

David stumbled into the world of broadcasting at the turn of the Millennium when he was invited to comment on the stock market crash. He says, “I think I stunned Londoners speechless when I said the good thing about the crash is that shares are now more affordable for people who want to invest in the stock market!”

His attitude to investing has never wavered, as he always sees downturns in the market as a buying opportunity for long-term investors.
