Does The Euro Have A Future?

In this week’s episode:

David Kuo chats with Ruth Lea, director and economic adviser at Arbuthnot Banking Group. David asks Ruth why she believes the Eurozone is "quintessentially dysfunctional" and what can be done to fix the problems. They also look at the Bank of England's strategy of quantitative easing (QE) and examine whether it is working. Listen out for the one foreign language that Ruth thinks we should all learn.

On the whole re-balancing the economy: I'm sure that there is a big place in the UK for finance. In fact, I can't imagine the UK without it. However, the big problem is that the money from finance dominates the UK economy, and by extension, London and the South-east dominates the UK economy.
With that level of concentration, the UK takes a massive hit when there is a financial crisis. A more diverse economy, not only by sector, but also by region, would serve the UK as a whole better, imv.

I think the same of the Australian economy. Too concentrated, this time in resources rather than finance, even if the long-term future of commodities looks bright.

David Kuo is The Motley Fool’s media personality. He can be heard on BBC London’s (94.9FM) Breakfast Show where he arouses listeners every weekday morning with his unique brand of financial news. He is also a regular commentator on national news programmes including CNBC, BBC News, and Sky News.

David stumbled into the world of broadcasting at the turn of the Millennium when he was invited to comment on the stock market crash.
