Frequently Asked Questions

Managing Your Motley Fool Identity

Q1. I have changed my email address how do I change my registered email address with the Fool.

There is a function in the Fool system that helps you to change your email address. There are two possibilities:

  1. If you are a "Full member" of the Fool site, you will be able to log in by giving your email address (or username) and password. In that case this is what you need to do:
    1. Login as normal
    2. Click on Discussion Boards
    3. Click on Customise
    4. Click on Email Address and then follow the instructions
The Edit Settings page also allows you to change your username, password and profile details. It's worth taking a look at even if you don't need to update anything!
  2. If you are currently only subscribed to our newsletters, you'll need to register in order to change your e-mail address. We only enable registered users (ie, people with a log-in password) to change their e-mail address, so that other people can't change your subscribed address. To set up a completely free Fool account, which will give you full access to the Fool UK website and enable you to manage your own details (including updating your e-mail address), please go to http://www.fool.co.uk/community/register/RegisterStartB.asp?ref=CSFAQ

Q2. I want to change my password. How do I do that?

That is a good idea. If it is worth having a password it is worth the effort of changing it from time to time. You wouldn't want someone else posting rude messages in your name now would you?

If you have forgotten your current password see I have forgotten my password. How do I set a new one?. If you know your current password here is how to change it:

  1. Login as normal
  2. Click on Discussion Boards
  3. Click on Customise
  4. Click on Password and then follow the instructions

Q3. I have forgotten my password. How do I set a new one? (I am not a new User.)

On the login page you will see a link called "Forget your password or don't have one? Get it here.". If you follow that link you will be on the "Difficulties Logging In" page where you can enter your username in the left hand box, an email will be sent to your registered email address containing a link. This link will take you to a secure part of the Fool site where you can nominate your new password. Clever eh?

Once you have your new password, you can then login.

Q4. I just registered and the Fool won't let me in. How do I change my password?

All Fool identities start off blocked at registration while we check your email address. We do this by sending an email with a special link that allows you to activate your Fool identity. If you have not yet clicked that link you will need to look out your welcome email and do so before you can change your password. (Maybe you won't need to change your password after all.) If you don't have your welcome email See Q1 in the Access and Registration FAQ for what to do.

Q5. I just registered and I changed my password after registration but the Fool won't let me in. What's going on?

If you tried to change your password before you had activated your Fool identity the system ignores the change (no matter how it appears). When you activate your account it will always start with the password which you chose at registration time even if you have tried to change the password in between.

When you login you should do so with the username and password you chose at registration. While the registration block is in place no changes to your account will have been allowed and this includes any password change you tried to make.

If you don't remember your original password then once you have activated your Fool identity see Q3.

Q6. I want to change my username. How do I do that?

First of all, be aware that there is a limit on the number of changes of name which you can make in a year and that there are other inconveniences associated with changing.

To change your username this is what you do:

  1. Login as normal by clicking the login tab and going through to the login page at login page
  2. Click on Discussion Boards
  3. Click on Customise
  4. If you click on the bit for "Change User name" on the third grey band you will be taken to the edit Username page. Instructions (and warnings) are provided on the page.

Q7. I have forgotten my username. What can I do?

Easy. On the Login Page you will find a link called "(Forget your password or don't have one? Get it here.)" which takes you to the page. You simply need to enter your email address and click "Get Username" and the system will send you an email with your username.

Q8. I have forgotten my password. What can I do?

Easy. On the Login Page you will find a link called "(Forget your password or don't have one? Get it here.)" which takes you to the page. You simply need to enter your email address and click the "Change Password" button and the system will send you a link which allows you to reset you password.

Q9. I notice other people have a "profile" page. How do I do I get one?

If you are a registered user of the Fool site you will already have a profile page. It starts off blank if you have not completed it. To update your profile this is what you do:

  2. Go to any Boards page (click the Boards tab)
  3. In the yellow band below the tabs, click on "CUSTOMISE". This will take you to the "Edit settings" page
  4. If you click on the bit for "Edit / Personal" on the third grey band you will be taken to the edit Username page
  5. Enter the information you want to add and click "Submit Changes"
  6. You could fill in the "Interview with Yourself" while you are there. (It is the next one along on the same line at the top.)
