I believe this is a long term success story. Down on some weakness in the quarter. Good time to add it to my CAPS portfolio...

Long-time FOOLS may be well aware of Panera Breads Co. (PNRA) as a superbly run company (the CEO was interviewed by David Gardner in the Radio Show a few months back) which has positioned itself nicely to the 30 - 45 year olds especially second generation boomers. The CEO previously ran Au Bon Pain and successfully at that. Panera has grown tremendously the past few years but I believe it is just the beginning. Despite their slightly premium price for an average customer, they thrive among its target customer. They now offer breakfast, lunch and dinner menus to an eager and captive clientele. I suspect that even if the real estate market crashes, retail growth companies such as PNRA would be able to buy retail space for cheaper amounts. This is a growth stock to buy at today's prices, considering their most recent quarter was only slightly dissapointing for its stock to be punished badly (15% drop in a day).

Great product and concept. Well managed, opening new restaurants at a rate of ~10% of total yearly.

PNRA has been beaten down from its high P/E in the last few months based on fears of lagging same-store sales and high gas prices. But PNRA not only has many more markets to penetrate; its SSS will improve over the next few years as the company ramps up its evening offferings. Factor in the company's tip-top management and prudent expansion-from-operations model (it carries no debt), and you you have a long-term winner.

They have a great product, are efficient and do good market research before opening a new store.

Panera has a track record of success, good food and nice atmosphere at reasonable cost. They have a highly replicable store, meaning they are not real estate limited to front-and-center locations like larger restaraunts - rather they can multiply ala Starbucks in storefronts. They do not sell individual franchises - rather they sell master franchises for at least 15 stores to experienced and successful operators only - this is key. They have lots of growth space left.

Recently stock price off about 30%. I love this place. Like Peter Lynch says, buy what you know.

Personally I think Panera is overvalued... but the common wisdom is invest in the companies whose products you use - and everyone I know eats there. We are entering fall and my gnomes tell me that demand for Soup will be high this year. Look for PNRA to continue to outperform the S&P even if it has grown a little fat.

I feel very comfortable going to Panera - and I like the fact that I'm eating a little healthier than fast food. Invest in what you know and like...I like the expansion prospects...and the fact that it is a cheaper stock than it was 8 months ago.

People continue to look for alternatives to the fast food menu. Panera continues to expand, and keeps consistent product quality in its stores.
