Personally I don't like ANYTHING right now (5/8/13) after another of Wall St.'s annoying bull markets that doesn't pull back AT ALL and give investors an entry point. 18 up days in a row seems almost like a conspiracy. I'm not a short seller - I just want to get in at a price I can live with. But anyway, Boeing is in great position right now in so many ways! I also like GE as one of their main suppliers.....

Great runs in BA. Let's do it again.

Same stock I bet on at $75 (see my CAPS comments on that position for the reasons) and closed out automatically due to meeting target ($86) much faster than I expected. Sooo-o-o glad I had a bundle of real money invested at $74.50 .

BA is in the middle of a strong run in a bull market. Most analysts have moved targets significantly higher ($88 - $105) in the last month. Boeing has INCREASED 787 production throughout all the Li-Ion battery escapade. 787s are stacked up like cordwood at Paine field and in Nth Charleston. When the dam breaks, Boeing has TWO delivery centers to unleash a tidal wave of these puppies onto customers... and the revenue sheet will show it..

Even with the glowing future almost here, at this price I perceive more risk (need to shave back my real $$$ position); but I still expect this stock to go up.

April 25, 2013 update: Well, we have arrived at the 90s. Ain't it sweet? With news outlets everywhere ripping up BA over teh battery scare, BA was quietly executing strongly on everything (including 787). At the Q1 earnings discussion it finally broke like a overwhelming surprise on most, that BA was going to knock it out of the park with or without 787. Now we know what BA can do without delivering 787s, and we know they will be delivering a LOT of 787s in Q2 and Q3. Think it is time to get on the train? Oh yes.

At this lofty height that BA hasn't seen in years, I am shaving back my real money position by 25%, only because near 100% of my retirement was invested there; but am still deeply long BA.

I think there is potential for tons of growth once the Dreamliner is fully functional. Also with the back order of many planes, once filled there will be a large profit growth.

Cash flow from the 787 will drive shares higher in the next few months, continueing through the next few years. So much cash. Commercial jet sales are expected to be high for some time and the earnings from the 737 and 777 programs will carry the weight. 787 will become profitable within a few years and add to the earnings picture.

Boeing has underperformed its competitor Airbus out of Europe despite having orders comparable to them. Both companies have a warchest of backlogs in solid orders and continue to innovate.
BA has a big defense component despite sequestration still going.
Once the FAA clears all 787 flights, BA productivity will be enhanced more.

The hysteria about the Dreamliner's batteries did not batter BA stock as much as I had hoped it would as I was waiting to buy. But I bought anyway. Again a long term and fairly conservative pick for my portfolio I think.

Middle term when it becomes clear that the A350 will not be able to be ready in time and not be able to compete rith the combination B777X and B787-1000

With engineering issues, or rather, re-engineering issues that could stretch months, then add testing and approval. Add manufacturing changes and installation, then add Union problems with the engineers themselves and potential cuts in defence, this stock is going to take a hit. Bad? no, BA is BA. But this stock has short and mid-term problems.

Company has been underperforming the S+P for at least the last year. Just under 41% of revenues come from military related sales that could be impacted by any budget cuts due to sequestration. The 787s problems could also negatively impact the commercial side. A lot of defense companies seem to be acting like sequestration won't happen but I keep reading that it's a closer to 50/50 bet.

I'll pick BA to continue to underperform in the near to medium term. The company should be fine long term and the dividend will provide some downside cushion, so I'm not expecting a huge chop, just general market underperformance.

Just wanted to add a comment about the latest 787 woes.

This has been the plan for manufacturing this plane all along. The design was hurried through the process as much as it could in hopes of fixing flaws while the plane was in service. You don't make money with planes on the ground. There were several design issues due to things being rushed which is why the 787 was delayed nearly 2 years. Now the plane is having some teething issues. This is not the first issue and it won't be the last. The engineers will fix this problem and the plane will be flying again by the end of the month.

Besides, who else is going to steal their thunder, Airbus? haha They are still buried under the A380 which is also still having teething issues.

Believe it or not, the hysteria over the 787's difficulties and resulting decline in share price are actually *understating* the risks. Right now, the risks are three: a potential SPEEA strike, exacerbating the difficulty of fixing the 787, and additional to defense spending cuts that are all but certain. Each risk is greater today than it's been in months past, yet Boeing stock, at $75, actually costs 10% *more* than it cost in mid-2012.

Defense spending is decreasing and the Dreamliner is off to a very rocky start. The negative impact on earnings will contine for a couple of years.

Boeing is facing some near term headwinds - uncertainty / cutting of defense budgets and costs associated with increasing output on it's various airplane products. In the plus column the defense side of Boeing is aggressively pursuing international business and other opportunities to offset the US defense uncertainty. On the commercial airplane side they have the potential to increase revenue through increased production, cost control and new / improved product offerings.

Give it a year or so and it will be 100-110 the 787 is ready to pop.
